What do I do?

I am an equine biomechanics coach, specialising in the prevention and rehabilitation of lameness. I do this by addressing the core functions of the body, including the musculoskeletal systems, most specifically, the thoracolumbar spine.

The musculoskeletal system provides support, stability and movement to the body. It is made up of the bones of the skeleton, muscles, cartilage, tendons, ligaments, joints and other connective tissue that supports and binds organs and tissue together. So, how do we address the core functions of the body? By looking at the forces that create the movement and finding ways to lower the forces on the body which create injury. Gravity, for example, is an external force that quite frankly we can't do much about unless you wanted to take a trip to the moon! But, we can address the internal forces of the musculoskeletal system to help overcome the external forces acting on the body. This helps the horse find an efficient way of moving, creating soundness.

Training is offered to anyone who needs help to identify the root cause of the problems they may have and therefore start a correct rehabilitation program that will greatly benefit the horse and rider.  Perhaps your vet has diagnosed Navicular syndrome or maybe they have found kissing spines - but why have these problems even occurred and more importantly can we help the horse to overcome these issues?

Maybe your horse rushes at his flying changes or he changes late behind. And what about the lazy horse, that suddenly, out of the nowhere turns into a bucking machine, or the horse that is so distracted and spooky that he's becoming a danger to ride. When we look closer, one of the reasons could be that the lazy horse has gone into protection mode and very cleverly, is slowing himself down to prevent further unbalance and damage, or perhaps he's in pain and what he has to say falls on deaf ears so he ends up shouting as loud as he can?! Maybe the spooky horse is trying to distract you from the perfect but difficult right bend you are asking for and the only way to get your attention is to jump up in the air and scare you half to death!

You may have a niggling problem of crookedness or your horse always falls out on a circle. Or perhaps your saddler can't quite get the saddle to fit so has to flock it more on one side. What about his shoes, do they wear evenly? Or what about the things you'd never have thought were anything to do with balance - like the rug always slipping to one side or his lovely tail getting caught around his back legs as he walks? All of these problems and many more are the outcome of not finding good balance and muscle coordination, so he can physically and mentally do the job you asking of him. We all have small and sometimes big challenges and corrections to make and it can seem like a very daunting task.

In your lessons, you will learn how to fine tune your riding position and your horses muscular system in a way that is biomechanically correct and comfortable for them. You will learn that a feather light contact and no movement of the hands is very achievable once you have learned how to use your core, pelvis and muscular tone effectively. You will also discover how your thoughts, emotions and intent can be quite powerful, your self doubt will dissolve and you and your horse will be calm and centered.

I will inspire you to do things totally differently and reignite your love and passion for all things equine. I will teach you to talk to the horse in his language of problem solving and I will support you step by step as you build confidence in your horse and your skill. I will encourage you to follow your intuition and discover many new possibilities.
